We are super excited to announce that the UNITED STATES NATIONAL SNOWBOARD TEAM IS COMING TO OTSEGO… and one skier from the US Ski Team. Skiers stand and represent! The Team will be at the resort this month from January 14th until the 18th to train and prepare for the upcoming national events this winter. Make sure to come up that weekend and ride alongside some of the best athletes in the world! As we write this, the final details are being put together for a private gathering for you and your guests to meet and spend some time with the team. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet some of greatest athletes in the country. Already confirmed to stop by and train include last year’s Olympic snowboarding team members Gretchen Bleiler, Louie Vito, Greg Bretz and Simon Dumont of the US Ski Team.

Gretchen Bleiler
The brightest smile in snowboarding, Aspen’s Gretchen Bleiler has reason to beam as one of the sport’s most successful women. Her killer personality and character have exposed millions to snowboarding through modeling in magazines like Glamour, but her talent in the halfpipe speaks much louder. She earned her chops cruising on to the ‘06 Olympic Team and landing a silver medal. She made the Olympic team again in 2010, but it was her collection of yet another X Games gold medal in 2010 (her third) that has Bleiler looking back on a great year. Gretchen was the first female rider to perfect an inverted backside 540, known as the crippler.

Greg Betz
The future of snowboarding undoubtedly lies with Greg Bretz who began snowboarding at age five, competing by age 11 and a world known rider on the Olympic team at age 19. This young rider out of Mammoth Lakes, CA started developing his riding skills early on and began competing in USASA. Bretz continued to go bigger in his progression and started taking on bigger contests around the world. His 2007-08 season received international victory as he competed and took home top 3 wins in the World Cups in Quebec, South Korea and Japan. The 2010 season was a stellar performance year for Bretz who took top five wins on multiple Grand Prix stops, X Games and World Cups. By January 2010, Bretz received the highest honor with a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team where he competed and placed 12th in the halfpipe contest.

Louie Vito
Louie Vito is taking snowboarding to brand new places – primetime places. Officially an alum of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, Vito exploded onto the scene at the age of 17 with big superpipe contest finishes at both the New Zealand (4th) and Australian Opens (1st). Five years later Vito was saying hello to the big time as he landed high scores in dancing before waltzing his way onto the 2010 Olympic halfpipe Team where he finished fifth. As a youth, Vito’s parents made the decision to send him to the prestigious Stratton Mountain School in Vermont where Vito’s raw talent flourished into a polished style. Today, he is known for his technical riding style and back-to-back double corks topped off with a 12 at the bottom of the pipe. He excels in all aspects of the sport – pipe, slopestyle, rails and back-country kickers. This diversity on his board along with his amazing charismatic personality has made Vito one of the most sought after pros today.

Simon Dumont
Dumont is notable as one of the best freestyle skiers in the world today. He is known for his amplitude in half-pipe competitions, airing easily up to 20 feet out of the pipe, and doing double superman fronts. In 2009 he also won the X Games Big Air competition stomping a double front flip. He has participated in many freestyle events, mostly big air and halfpipe, and was part of Team America for the Jon Olsson Super Sessions (JOSS) along with American freestyle skiers Tom Wallisch, and Alex Schlopy. On April 11, 2008, Simon Dumont set the current world quarter-pipe height record at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine. He aired 35.5 feet out of a 38-foot quarter-pipe, while performing a cork 900 tail grab.

Ellery Hollingsworth
Ellery Hollingsworth is quickly establishing herself as a leader of the sport’s next wave. The Stratton Mountain School graduate already wrote her name in history, becoming the first woman to land a 10. In 2010, Hollingsworth charged with the best in the sport and, though she only narrowly missed a spot on the ultra competitive Olympic team, she had some pretty up there consistency with two 5th-place finishes at the Grand Prix, as well as one fifth on the World Cup.

Kelly Marren
At a young age, Kelly Marren enjoyed the intensity of competing and soon found her gymnastic skills of use when it came to snowboarding. This naturally skilled pipe rider learned to fly and now flies in the pipe during competitions. Currently a student at Stanford, Marren balances her academics with snowboard competitions around the world. The past couple seasons, Marren has done extremely well in pipe competitions and has been featured in many snowboard magazines. In 2010, she found herself toe-to-toe with snowboarding’s elite to notch top 10s in all of the Grand Prix Olympic qualifying events. For the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Marren was with the Team cheering them onto victory and gaining a deep understanding of the highest level of competition. With a bright future ahead of her, Marren will continue to balance school and snowboard competitions into 2011.

Kaitlyn Farrington
Kaitlyn Farrington is quickly working her way up the ranks of the freestyle snowboarding world with big time results that foreshadow the makings of an athlete who will make waves in the sport. Farrington landed on the Rookie Team in 2008 and since has pushed her progress, taking silver at the Dew Tour and a big time gold at Winter X Games Europe. Now Farrington’s graduated from rook ie to pro team, and will likely continue to blow the competition away.

Zach Black
Zach Black grew up riding some of the world’s best halfpipes in Colorado and has delivered some top performances in competitions the last couple years. His riding style delivers high airs and a repertoire of tricks that deliver the highest level of halfpipe riding. With top wins in the Revolution Tour, Dew Tour and Grand Prix, Black is no joke when it comes to riding against the best and being one of the best. In the 2010 Mammoth Grand Prix, Black became the first rider to land a switch backside 1080 in competition. Remain on the lookout for Zach Black in the future, he was a close contender for the 2010 Olympic Team and put in great strides towards being an Olympic contender in 2014.

Matt Ladley
With one of the best lein air’s in the business, Matt Ladley has impressed many fellow and well-known riders around him. With a home base in Steamboat Springs, Ladley has traveled the contest circuits and been dealt his fair share of injuries but nevertheless he’s been tearing up halfpipes along the way. All it took was one year and a podium on the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix Series to help escalate his career into the pro ranks. His most progressive year, 2009-10, landed him a second place finish on the Grand Prix tour and a strong showing against the best U.S. riders. The future keeps looking bright for Ladley as he strides towards the top of the pro ranks with an impressive bag of tricks.

JJ Thomas
JJ Thomas was first noticed in the snowboarding world when he placed on the podium at the Vans 2001 Triple Crown at Breckinridge. At the 2002 Winter X Games, he won the super-pipe, which earned him a spot on the 2002 Winter Olympic team, where he won a bronze medal in half-pipe. Although he continued to compete after 2002, and tried to make the 2006 US Winter Olympic team, he has focused his efforts on a film career, working with Stanford film crews. At the 2003 Winter X super-pipe, Thomas landed a 1080, without having attempted it before, but finished in a controversial sixth place.

Ben Watts
At a young age, Ben Watts quickly developed as a skateboard and snowboarder into the rider he would become well into his teens. By age 11, he was a sponsored athlete and making his ascent into the pro ranks against well-established snowboard pros. While balancing online classes and competitions, Watts has taken home podium finishes in the European and Canadian Open, Grand Prix and USASA Nationals. His riding has been featured in Warren Miller’s “Playground” and is constantly on the mountain working to make himself a better athlete. Watts is hoping to take his finishes from the Grand Prix and turn them into podium wins for the upcoming season. His goal is to make it to the Olympics and at such a young age, we certainly have more to expect from this young talented rider in the future.

Steve Fisher
Fisher got started on a half-pipe cut into a former garbage dump in Minnesota when he was 8 years old, but he soon caught the travel bug and went searching for stiffer competition. He eventually caught coach Bud Keene’s eye as a forerunner at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. In 2009 as he busted the season open, finishing second at the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix in Copper, Colo. He went on to make his mark on the tour with a Grand Prix win in Boreal, Calif. Fisher opted for a World Cup competition over the final Grand Prix, but the competitor still managed to hit two birds with one stone as he made the World Cup podium with a third in Spain, and still had enough points to tie for overall Grand Prix tour champion with Louie Vito.

Don’t miss the first ever “Am Jam” in Birmingham, MI on Sept. 26th sponsored by The Otsego Club (OtsegoClub.com) and Planet (PlanetSnowTools.com) in collaboration with Middle Earth (MiddleEarthSnowSeries.com) and hosted by Don Thomas Sporthaus (DonThomasSporthaus.com)!

There will be a snowboard rail demo and skate demo from 11am – 1pm on Otsego’s new skateboard mini ramp and bowl! The rail jam starts at 1pm. We’re only taking 35 riders, so RSVP at railjam@the-opark.com to be a part of it. Prizes will include ski passes to The Otsego Club and its world-class terrain park, The O-Park. Anyone present for the “Am Jam” event will have the chance to win a one year membership to The Otsego Club in a free blind drawing.

While you’re out, be sure to stop by Planet and Otsego booths for free-bees and check out the 22 foot pipe machine that Planet is bringing to Otsego. It’s a teaser for the huge 22 foot halfpipe – the only Olympic sized 22 foot pipe East of the Rockies and one of only 5 others in North America. This winter if you come out to The O Park you’ll see some of the best riders in the world training on The O-Park’s 22 foot pipe as they prepare for the 2010 Olympics held in Vancouver, BC.

Bring your snowboard and skateboard and be a part of Birmingham’s 1st Annual “Am Jam”!
